What's Stopping You From Getting Started?

What’s stopping you from getting started may be the question you’ve asked yourself for quite a while now. Because this is a simple topic to address, I'm going to keep this post brief today. It cannot be easy to put into practice at times, but the remedy is straightforward.

Here's the million-dollar question: 

"What can I do to overcome my apprehension and procrastination and get started"?

--Get rid of your excuses and your mile-long to-do list.

This week, I've heard more excuses from people who can't seem to get started in real estate investing than I have in a long time. They must wait until the stars are "perfectly aligned" before they can begin. You know, reasons like these:

  • I don't know where to start
  • I haven't chosen a logo yet.
  • I have to make a decision on whether or not to form a limited liability company (LLC).
  • I need to decide whether to use a yellow or green postcard.
  • I don't have a suitable image to utilize in my marketing materials.
  • I'm undecided on whether to use white or colored envelopes for my mailings.
  • I'm not sure where my buy-and-hold approach should be focused.
  • I'll get started as soon as I figure out if I'll just use my name or have a corporation named after myself.
  • I have another course I must complete, and then I will be ready
  • I don't have all my I's dotted and T's crossed
  • I don't know this, and I don't remember that.

And the list goes on forever! I'm pretty sure there are at least a dozen more of these reasons why people say they can't seem to get started; they can't seem to take those first steps. However, if you look closely at the list, you will notice that none of these items is required to start real estate investing. You can work out these minor details as you go. The world will not end because the color of your envelope is incorrect. There will be no effect on your business if you do not have a logo. 

Everything Is "Figureoutable" (Is that a word?)

In the past few years, I have learned that what has served me well is to say "YES" and figure out the details later. You would always learn a thing or two along the way. You would know what works and does not work. As Marie Forleo says, "Everything is figureoutable." That is a simple truth. 

What Is Indeed Going On?

Why is getting started so hard? There are two main reasons. Some people are so immobilized by fear that they are unable to act. Rather than risk making a mistake and then correcting a course, they never take any action. They read books and blogs,

Buy courses and go to seminars and meetings. That's where they stay forever, in their comfort zone, which is the road to "nowhere." How much money do they make? These "reasons" are also why we cannot achieve our goals in life, real estate investing, and life in general if we don't know how to take risks.

Others are waiting for everything to be perfect and to have every detail figured out. But the truth is that it will never be perfect, and you will never know it all. So accept that and move on. Free yourself today from "perfection."

Here's the Real Secret to Success; the Magic Formula:

It would be best if you got some education, but you don't need an MBA in real estate investing to get started. You must be "enrolled in school" and commit to lifelong learning. So, get some primary education, and give yourself a timetable or a deadline for taking "actionable" steps to get your first property under contract. 

  • Subscribe to the "no excuses" method.
  • Just do it.
  • Get a plan, set a deadline, and begin.
  • Get an "Accountability" partner or a mentor!

Combined with the proper education, having a partner and mentor is one of the best ways to take the fear factor away because they can hold your hand step by step and teach you the ropes. They can make sure all your I's are dotted and T's are crossed, giving you the confidence to pull the trigger and make that first offer.
